What Members Thought
This was a tough one for me. Now I know why I did not study philosophy. I did have to read this one not only for a better understanding of classic Greek texts but for a better understanding of history. I found the discussion of government very interesting particularly when looking at our own political processes which is basically called dysfunction. Socrates is a singularly unpleasant narrator. He is smug, asks leading questions, and often compares apples to oranges to prove his points. While I enjoy Socratic-style discussions and learning and have enjoyed Plato in the past, reading this was a pain. However, the insight into the culture of Plato’s society and certain ideas make this a worthwhile read.
