This was a tough one for me. Now I know why I did not study philosophy. I did have to read this one not only for a better understanding of classic Greek texts but for a better understanding of history. I found the discussion of government very interesting particularly when looking at our own political processes which is basically called dysfunction. Hopefully our form of government will not be that of the despot. What will happen? What has happened? Only time will tell. Overall an average but I ...more

Socrates is a singularly unpleasant narrator. He is smug, asks leading questions, and often compares apples to oranges to prove his points. While I enjoy Socratic-style discussions and learning and have enjoyed Plato in the past, reading this was a pain. However, the insight into the culture of Plato’s society and certain ideas make this a worthwhile read.
