I love Dickens and the eyes he set on a time of horrid living conditions, poverty and lack of Social intervention. Oliver is an orphan whose mother dies in a workhouse. His life is miserable and impoverished and yet he retains a sense of innocence and we feel his pain as the awful events unfold and he suffers. gosh I enjoyed this. I had pretty low expectations because so many Dickens fans said it was their least liked dickens novel. The descriptions at times really gave me the sense that I was there. I think the thing you most need to do is to expect Oliver Twist himself is not the main character. Other characters are really as important as he is. So be prepared to not see him through large portions of the novel. Some parts of this novel are grisly. At times, it really is a monstrous book.
This is only my second book I've read by Dickens. I really loved it. I had some idea of what Oliver Twist was about but it was much more than that. It was more exciting than expected.
