I am a little conflicted about this. On one hand, as always, Toni Morrison's writing is gripping and her characters and settings are great. On the other hand, I didn't like the story of this as much as some of Morrison's other books. We follow a cast of characters from a small town in Ohio at the beginning of the 1900's, focusing mostly on two multi-generational families, and mostly on Nel and Sula, childhood friends. I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed seeing how the characters gained an understanding of their lives, and the lives of the people around them. It was a sad story in many ways, but also one of great understanding.
