This book is set in the time period right after Polk's administration. I just finished a biography of Polk it set me up nicely for the history behind this book.
Willa Cather writes of a slower time in history and she uses beautiful prose to describe the people and places in this story.

My Antonia has always been one of my favorite books, and after reading Archbishop, I am kicking myself for not reading sooner. I love New Mexico and Cather’s descriptions of the state in 1850 is out of this world. Not a huge plot, but it’s not needed...
