The Catcher in the Rye seems to be one of “those” books that is on all of the typical reading lists: high school must-reads, timeless classics, cultural icons. The tale of Holden Caulfield is familiar to most because of the novel’s notoriety: the troubled youth who finds himself expelled from (yet another) school and spends a few days gallivanting around New York City before fessing up to his parents. It was quite different than I thought it would be... Reminds me of The Goldfinch and The Bell Jar. Perhaps a little The Outsiders, too...

I'm surprised this book is so often taught in high schools, and not surprised about how often it was banned.

That said, I found that I enjoyed this short read.

My oversimplified synopsis is of a hurting teenager, who misses his family desperately and covers up his pain by an overly tough guy exterior.

If you can look past his rough side, you will see a sad, hurting, but caring teen, who actually is not as bad as a role model as he first appears.

I read this book 20 years ago and I only remember that it was good. Reading it again now was great as it just informed me how important this novel is at craft and storytelling.
