The Catcher in the Rye seems to be one of “those” books that is on all of the typical reading lists: high school must-reads, timeless classics, cultural icons. Like most Americans, I read this for a class my sophomore year in high school. I absolutely loved it and continued to read it roughly yearly well into my 30s. And, yet each year, I related to Holden a tiny bit less.

I'm surprised this book is so often taught in high schools, and not surprised about how often it was banned.
That said, I found that I enjoyed this short read.
My oversimplified synopsis is of a hurting teenager, who misses his family desperately and covers up his pain by an overly tough guy exterior.
If you can look past his rough side, you will see a sad, hurting, but caring teen, who actually is not as bad as a role model as he first appears. ...more
