I first read this book I think when I was about ten or eleven, and found it exciting and, indeed, a great inspiration to the cowboys and Indians games my generation of boys played out in the woods behind our houses. Literary merit meant nothing to us if we could track the deep woods (in fact a wooded gulley only a few hundred feet wide, but it was a world to us) following in the footsteps of Hawkeye and rescuing the fair maidens (played, of course, by my best friend's sisters).
