I first read this book I think when I was about ten or eleven, and found it exciting and, indeed, a great inspiration to the cowboys and Indians games my generation of boys played out in the woods behind our houses. Literary merit meant nothing to us if we could track the deep woods (in fact a wooded gulley only a few hundred feet wide, but it was a world to us) following in the footsteps of Hawkeye and rescuing the fair maidens (played, of course, by my best friend's sisters).

Classic American stories are part of our lives. We read books on them, references in television series, and watch movies on them. But when we read the actual classic, we find that what we thought it was about is slightly different. The Last of the Mohicans is no different.

You know, it reminded me of those old western adventure comics that I used to pick from the shelves of boy relatives. I quickly changed them to Batman and Superman. Like I did with this one, quickly changed to another book (I'd been reading it for days but I never made it through halfway). It was just too boring for me to handle. A more engaging story and the message would have come across better, too. ...more

Just not fun to read.
The characters were accurate and thorough. (As humans...not getting into Native American depictions.) The plot moved along and the story compelling. But OMG I hated slogging through all those words.
