This gothic book is a classic written by Daphne Du Maurier. I have watched the 1952 movie with Richard Burton and Olivia de Havilland and the movie does follow the book.

Daphne du Maurier can tell a story, that’s for sure.
Phillip Ashley was orphaned as a small child and adopted by his uncle, Ambrose Ashley. Early in the novel, Ambrose dies and his wife Rachel returns to the Ashley estate in England. Philip is heir of the estate while Rachel inherited nothing. At first, Philip is convinced Rachel was responsible for Ambrose’s death, but after meeting her he’s not so sure. Like many Du Maurier stories, this novel dealt much with suspicion and naivete. Imo, it was not Du Maurier's best work. Neither was Rebecca, though, in fact - I prefer the collection of short stories that I read. I may have enjoyed this one much more if I had read it during the winter or only on rainy days - the sunny and cheerful Texas weather just did not fit the mood. Also, my reading was somewhat hampered by my research about the author's alleged plagiarism of Rebecca and, if I'm not mistake

Ridiculously good!
This is my first experience with Daphne du Maurier's writing, and /wow/. I waited far too long.
Philip, the ultimate prat...I won't go into details because spoilers galore, but I could not believe the ending. Selfish until the very end. The audio narration for this book was excellent. ...more
