This gothic book is a classic written by Daphne Du Maurier. I have watched the 1952 movie with Richard Burton and Olivia de Havilland and the movie does follow the book.
Ambrose Ashley raised his cousin, Philip Ashley, after the death of Philip's parents.

This was a brilliantly written, twisting tale of deceit and possibly madness. It was so cleverly characterised that you simply did not know who to mistrust and who to believe. It is dripping with atmosphere (like all of Du Maurier's work) and completely draws you into the world. I can say no more without spoilers, except to say that even after finishing it, I am still puzzling this one over in my mind.
