In sparse and vivid prose an old man's fishing trip is described. Through his poignant relationship with a young boy and his thoughts while all alone, far out at sea, one gets to know him and the tough life he leads. It is brutal. But the old man's love for, and intimate connection to the elements and the beasts of the ocean makes it utterly beautiful. I found myself completely drawn in, losing all sense of where I was.
