Laura
Adaptation of the novel by Charlotte Brontë about Lucy Snowe, who travels to th fictional city of Villette to teach at an all-girls school, where she meets romance and adventure. With Joseph Fiennes, Harriet Walter and Keira Knightley.

I am bound to say it might have been made much more truly impressive, if there had been less French, Rousseau-like sentimentalizing and wire-drawing; and rather more healthful carelessness of effect.

I can’t disagree!

At its heart, I suppose this is one of the first enemies-to-lovers romances.

This plot is simultaneously completely BANANAS and incredibly (truly, mind-numbingly) dull. To hell with all those people claiming this was Charlotte’s best book; this plot was a shit show: the big event

This is the rare book where the plot made me roll my eyes but I still loved every word. If you ever want the definition of being friend-zoned, read this book. Part of my problem was that the love interest was described in such a way that I was reminded of 2 people I work with, both of whom are not interested at all in any romantic engagement with women, before I realized he was actually supposed to be a love interest. I. I started this with the audiobook, listening to it during my commute, but my contract is up and my commute is commuted until the summer, and this is too good to listen to sporadically. So I will be buying it and reading it the good old fashioned way. In book form. More to come.

II. Space for my review when I get there.

While I enjoyed this book, it was a slow read. Unless you are fluent in French, I would recommend getting a version with translations in the footnotes. I read the first 150 pages without any and almost quit reading because I felt like I missed too much. Once I found a copy with translations, the book got vastly better.

The main character and, it seems, the author, read as severely prudish, which diminishes the enjoyment of this book. There are a number of really good character portraits, however, and it was worth reading for those. A word of warning, however: the first 3 chapters have a syrupy quality that makes them really hard to get through.
