This is one of those wonderful stories that work on multiple levels at once.
On one level, you have a loving husband who’s unsympathetic to “nervous” complaints and believes that ignoring the issue will make it go away. On another level, you have an ambiguous husband who (perhaps purposely?) consistently does exactly the wrong thing and worsens his wife’s condition. On a third level, you have a possible supernatural haunting.

The unnamed narrator, probably suffering from depression , is confined to a room in a rented house. She has been prescribed the rest-cure (commonly prescribed in the 19th century to patients suffering from hysteria or depression), not allowed any activity – intellectual or otherwise, though she does maintain a secret journal (that’s how we know what happens).
Left with nothing to do, all she can do is stare at the peeling wallpaper of the room eventually becoming obsessed with it.

Hmmm. I thought I remembered this book a bit differently. So...she's 10-96 without a doubt and wallpaper was her undoing.

The first half of this book was one of the most fantastic things I've ever read, and had it continued in that vein this would easily have been a 5 star book & an all time favorite.
As it stands, the second half was a lot less interesting to me, it felt far less real from both a womanhood & a MH perspective.
I'd still consider this a must-read book however, and a fantastic one at that ...more
