I hated this book. And I'm shocked. I thought it would be delightful, a beloved classic. I mean, they made an entire series about Mary Poppins. And the movie was great, of course. I was wrong. I hated this book. This Mary Poppins wasn't practically perfect in everyway. She was rude and bitchy. The way she treated the children, the way she treated Burt, and retailers....horrible.

It's fun to see the non-Disney version of Mary Poppins. She's certainly no Julie Andrews! She's ill tempered, cross, vain and plain rather than pretty - and yet the children obviously adore her.
I wasn't entirely enthralled with the story like I was with say Peter Pan but I can easily see how a child would love it and the episodic nature of the chapters make it great for bedtime story fodder. ...more
