This is a great children's story about a nanny who doesn't believe in references but who is very magical and very strict. When P.L. Travers (1899-1996) saw the Disney movie, with its dancing penguins (not in the book), she wept in the theater. ...more

It's fun to see the non-Disney version of Mary Poppins. She's certainly no Julie Andrews! She's ill tempered, cross, vain and plain rather than pretty - and yet the children obviously adore her.

I wasn't entirely enthralled with the story like I was with say Peter Pan but I can easily see how a child would love it and the episodic nature of the chapters make it great for bedtime story fodder. ...more

Shelves: read-aloud-to-kids

Started with me reading aloud, switched to audio version (good narrator, too). I'm a big fan of Disney's Mary Poppins, and we recently watched Saving Mr. Banks. Typically I enjoy a book more than the film, but in this case it is flipped. I think the book is quirky and ok, but the character of Mary Poppins is a bit mean in the book. I didn't find her endearing. I also didn't see the supposed plot point, that the book was about redeeming Mr. Banks. When was that to be? Idk.
