This is a great children's story about a nanny who doesn't believe in references but who is very magical and very strict. When P.L. Travers (1899-1996) saw the Disney movie, with its dancing penguins (not in the book), she wept in the theater.

It's fun to see the non-Disney version of Mary Poppins. She's certainly no Julie Andrews! She's ill tempered, cross, vain and plain rather than pretty - and yet the children obviously adore her.
I wasn't entirely enthralled with the story like I was with say Peter Pan but I can easily see how a child would love it and the episodic nature of the chapters make it great for bedtime story fodder. ...more

Started with me reading aloud, switched to audio version (good narrator, too). I'm a big fan of Disney's Mary Poppins, and we recently watched Saving Mr. Banks. Typically I enjoy a book more than the film, but in this case it is flipped. I think the book is quirky and ok, but the character of Mary Poppins is a bit mean in the book. I didn't find her endearing. I also didn't see the supposed plot point, that the book was about redeeming Mr. Banks. When was that to be? Idk.
