Available at LibriVox. What a splendid book, I prefer it compared with The Woman in White.
A completely satisfying resolution to a convoluted and original mystery! Great fun!
Finished Saturday evening -- and how appropriate is it that I finished on the night of a "Super Moon"? An excellent read, cleverly written in the style of several narratives offering different perspectives of different stages of the mystery - would recommend this to anyone who enjoys vintage mysteries. Though I was correct in guessing "whodunnit," I don't think anyone could have figured out the exact details of "how" it was done.

The Moonstone is widely regarded as the first detective novel. Yes, Sergeant Cuff does use a magnifying glass. Yes, he does get a an argument with the local police.

“Perhaps you think you see a certain contradiction here? In that case, a word in your ear. Study your wife closely, for the next four-and-twenty hours. If your good lady doesn't exhibit something in the shape of a contradiction in that time, Heaven help you!--you have married a monster.”

This book is widely acknowledged to be the first mystery but mystery lovers may be somewhat disappointed in the solution. I was. But there are enough fun plot twists and turns to make up for that. The book is really about the characters. Collins does an amazing job of making the characters so real you feel you can see them. That and his enlightened attitude toward race and class are what make this book a classic, in my opinion.

I had the pleasure to read The Woman in White a few years ago and was struck at the time by Wilkie Collin's ability to create an absorbing and compelling read. The Moonstone is an even better example of Collins' prowess. From the beginning, we are sucked into the story of a yellow diamond stolen from India and a group of men sworn to track it down and return it to its sacred spot. Collins couples his adventurous mystery with a handful of wonderful characters who take turns narrating the story. H

This book was good, though I must admit that I prefer Collins' The Woman in White. Some memorable characters in The Moonstone are Betteridge, with his sense of humor and fascination with sleuthing, and the great Sergeant Cuff ... a similar character to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. I found Cuff to be an enjoyable surprise in the book. Some stretches of the book were rather slow, but for the most part, this is an amusing read.
