What Members Thought

One of the best opening lines of any book ever, and some of the best writing I have ever read. Few books feel as real, or as heart-wrenching, as this book. We know that Plath did not make it out of The Bell Jar, which only adds to the poignancy of the novel.

Esther, a straight A student on scholarship, spends a month in New York working for a fashion magazine. She feels lost, inadequate and is already sinking into depression. As soon as she goes back, her mother tells her she has been rejected for the writing course she had applied to. And so begins her further descent into madness.
Though I liked the writing, the book somehow didn't work for me. I tried, but I just couldn't empathize with Esther's character. ...more
