I found this book both frustrating yet deeply affecting. Esther's sense of hollowness, the internal darkness and despair that grips inside and won't let go was palpable and rich. At one stage I had to put the book down because of the weight of the Esther's despair made me feel quite drained.

Esther, a straight A student on scholarship, spends a month in New York working for a fashion magazine. She feels lost, inadequate and is already sinking into depression. As soon as she goes back, her mother tells her she has been rejected for the writing course she had applied to. And so begins her further descent into madness.
