One of those books where you already somehow know the plot without ever reading it. I'm glad I did finally read it. Stevenson has some brilliant and lovely descriptions. The concept of man trying to dismantle his innate duality is brilliant. A classic worth it's reputation. ...more

I listened to the free audiobook on Audible, and it was excellent.

What a wonderful surprise this book is. I wasn't expecting the themes to resonate so beautifully with me. Stevenson's commentary of good versus evil, the duality of man, societal conformity, friendship, faith in one another and hope are all so well-done and moving.

Most of us have an idea about this story, but I think if you read this slim volume you would find moments with such intense insight that you would b ...more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. This is a collection of a couple of Robert Louis Stevenson's short stories and novellas. All of them have a dark theme, either gothic or horror or both. Stevenson contracted tuberculosis when young, suffered for much of his life from ill health as a result of tuberculosis, and died at the age of 44, and the themes of death and suffering feature prominently in all these stories.
