I've not seen the movie based on this book, and hesitated to read the book until all the attention had died down. I finally picked it up and was most thoroughly taken in by this compelling story of strength, sadness, cruelty, and perseverance. I cannot imagine the strength of character in anyone who endures such deprivation, torture and despair for so long after having known otherwise.
