Eloisa James is, in my opinion, one of the best, smartest writers around. She makes me proud to be a reader of romance novels. Which is why I'll refrain from venting any feelings of disappointment. I can't expect a favorite author to hit a home run every time. I noticed in her last few books that she is trying out different things (for want of a better word in my limited vocabulary) and that's always good for any writer, I think. Oftentimes, many established romance writers get stuck in a rut an

Ok Eloisa is a wonderful writer. She is knowledgeable about the era she writes so there are not any unusual word usages. I love how she can write about anything and make you feel like you are there.
I have read some reviews that are not all that positive.
Ok First it is fiction! If Romeo ever met Rapunzel how would it seriously turn out? Well that is what Eloisa has done.
Edie is a wonderful musician! She loves her cello. (I remember when I felt not that strong but similar to my flute so I get it) ...more

I stayed up until 1:30 am this morning to finish Once Upon A Tower, Eloisa James' retelling of the fairytale Rapunzel.
Tower held my attention and I loved how James wove in snippets from Shakespeare and included classic musical pieces throughout the novel.
I enjoyed the letter writing between our hero Gowan, the Duke of Kinross and Lady Edith our heroine which take place in chapter five. The letters give the reader a hint of the main character's personalities and the story ahead.

I must admit this wasn't my favorite of the Fairy Tale series. I was really disappointed until about the last 100 pages. Then it redeemed itself in a major way.
Our hero, Gowan, is a Scottish Duke looking for a bride. He spots Edie at a ball and purchases her from her father. It's quite a business transaction. Edie is infatuated with Gowan. As they get to know each other they really aren't particularly likeable or compatible. He is all business and she is dedicated only to her cello. Both are vir ...more

Think 1824 Scottish Romeo and Juliet meets English Rapunzel with a large dose of cello.
We have a hero, Gowan Duke of Kinross, and a heroine, Edie daughter of the Earl of Gilchrist, who are both driven, he by duty, she by music. Both are innocents in sexual AND social matters.
There is an amazing supporting cast: her step-mother Layla, his half-sister Susannah, some of Julia Quinn's Symthe-Smith clan, his majordomo Bardolph. And we have The Tower.

16 days is the longest it has ever taken me to finish a Eloisa James book and I have read each and everyone of them. This was a decent romance but the regency part was clearly missing. The fairy tale part was quite forced as well. It seems Author could have easily written this for any arranged marriage couple and the fact that the hero in the book was a duke was completely irrelevant. First time ever in Eloisa James books I didn't even remember that the female lead was actually a duchess. I woul

Eloisa James's fairy tale series has been pretty hit or miss for me, but this one was definitely a hit. Call me a contrarian, but I am a sucker for a love story in which the sex is not amazingly, multi-orgasmically perfect first time, every time. It's much more interesting when things are a little bit more real and they actually have to work for it. This story gives us what happens after the couple rides off into the sunset and shows the effort required for a happily ever after. Fun cam ...more

Again the author writes a clever story an loosely relates it to a fairy tale, this time Rapunzel! I gave this a 4 out of 5 because there were some parts where I found the pace to slow down an I wasn't sure of the direction the story was going. I guess it didn't flow seamlessly like some of the other books by this author. It's still a fabulous romance and good story. I particularly like how the couple isn't a perfect fit an have to work out their issues.

I was apprehensive about this book as I have not liked an Eloisa James book since Beauty Tamed the Beast. However, this book is amazing! It has heart, sensuality, great characters that you feel for, poetry, and a castle! I was really pulling for Gowan and Edie to work this out because you could tell in the pages that they really loved each other, but just had a lot of (incorrect) expectations based on their upbringing.
