Oh Tessa Dare, where have you been?

I should have known upon picking up this book that it was going to be good- JQ's praise is right on the cover. And boy, was it good.

Colin, Viscount Payne, has been grounded to the far reaches of the country by his well-meaning cousin. A devil-may-care rogue albeit with good intentions, Colin is left to occupy his time with widows from the village and a rather unimpressive militia. Colin, Viscount Payne, has been grounded to the far reaches of the country by his well-meaning cousin. A devil-may-care rogue albeit with good intentions, Colin is left to occupy his time with widows from the village and a rather unimpressive militia. He can't go back to London until he has his money and the only way to get his money is to marry. Like most historical romance heroes, he isn't buying into that nonsense.

Minerva Highwood, a debutante spending an extended stay in Sussex county has hardly spared a glance from her books and geological aspirations to spare Colin a glance...and when she has, it's generally one of disgust. However, desperate times call for desperate measures and when Minerva gets wind of a rumor that Colin may propose to her sister, Minerva steps in with a midnight proposition. A two-week journey to Scotland. A fake elopement. A chance for Minerva to live out her dream as a respected geologist and a hefty monetary prize to send Colin on his way back to dissolute London. How could this NOT work?

Tessa absolutely nailed this novel. Not only are the characters pitch perfect- Colin blends heart-melting charmer with dark, tortured soul and Minerva is sassy wrapped up in spectacles- but the plot is absolutely wonderful! She delivers humor, unexpected twists, a good deal of passionate nights and a poignant peeling-back of the characters' shells until they are bare to the reader. Be prepared for a virtual trip to Ceylon, a day spent at gunpoint, a commoner's fair, and a lovely happily-ever-after that in a way was bittersweet as it left me without those precious details of Colin and Minerva's future.

One other note- Colin truly was the epitome of romance heroes; he has personally entered my hallowed hall of fame with another of his namesake, Colin Bridgerton from JQ's Bridgerton series. He alone is worth the read. Now I'm off to discover the rest of Dare's novels! ...more

If you're going to enjoy this book, you'll need to suspend your belief. Just put it on pause. There are so many utterly implausible and totally ridiculous scenarios that befall the hero and heroine that the only way to keep from having your eyes roll right out of your head is to just saddle up and go for the ride. I hadn't read a book from Ms. Dare since Surrender of a Siren, and boy have I been missing out!

This was cute, funny but a little too similar to other stories I've read in the past - reminded me of
