I loved this book. I think that it is because I could relate to the female protagonist so much. She has been the girl who so often was overlooked at the society balls. She was written off as awkward and ugly -- or at least as unremarkable. She suffered the snide remarks of the rest of the "ton" because of the horrendous outfits that her mother would choose for her to wear, outfits that were not complimentary to her complexion. She didn't fit the norm, so she was often overlooked. She is now 28 y I loved this book. I think that it is because I could relate to the female protagonist so much. She suffered the snide remarks of the rest of the "ton" because of the horrendous outfits that her mother would choose for her to wear, outfits that were not complimentary to her complexion. She didn't fit the norm, so she was often overlooked. She is now 28 years old and labeled a spinster in a world where women are expected to marry young or not at all. But, below the outer surface of Penelope is a young woman who is witty and talented, a girl who is a wonderful dancer and very insightful. Unfortunately, no one can see this because she stays on the edge of society. She is a wallflower who stays out of the spotlight, and she does not engage others in conversation. She has also been secretly in love with Colin Bridgerton for more than ten years. Colin, however, like everyone else in the world, overlooks Penelope. The two of them have a very comfortable relationship and an ease of conversation that Penelope has with few others, especially among the men of society. Penelope is Colin's sister Eloise's best friend, and Colin can see her as little more than Eloise's friend. He definitely does not see her as a romantic potential. When he does dance with her, he does it out of pity because no one else will dance with her. This does not escape Penelope's understanding. The book is concerned with the evolution of this relationship. I enjoyed reading this because it felt real to me. It was fun to see the change that occurred in Colin when he began to see Penelope in a romantic fashion. He fought it all along the way because it seemed so odd to be romantically interested in Penelope who no one had ever seen in such a way. But once he fell for her, he fell hard. I thought that it was interesting how evident it was that Colin was in love with Penelope, but he had the hardest time labeling his feelings as love, even after he had decided to marry her. The proposal was pretty lame, but it worked. There is a huge side story in this novel about everyone trying to determine the identity of Lady Whistledown. I have to admit that I really didn't care too much about this, so I couldn't get excited for this plot point, but it does end up being important to the story, especially as it relates to Colin and Penelope's relationship. And what can I say? I absolutely LOVED Colin's solution to the problem that arises at the end of the novel. He's definitely a keeper. This was a great historical love story!

2018 Audio Update - My absolute all-time favorite regency romance book! I adore Colin Bridgerton. I adore Penelope Featherington. I adore their story. I see myself in Penelope, and this is the Happily Ever After that every Penelope of the world dreams of (and deserves!), I think. This time I listened to the audio version which was almost as good as the written version. This is a story that never fails to cause me to smile. I love it. So. So. Much. Five stars! ...more

I like this book the best out of all of Bridgerton series. Colin is special. Penelope is special. the readers feel what they feel... I recommend this book to anybody who want love, wit, humor, suspense all rolled into one, in a historical setting.
