This novel takes the form of a diary by the unnamed wife of Philip Bentley, a frustrated painter who has been a small town church minister for a number of years in spite of his apparent lack of faith. His hypocrisy and its effect on his art, as well as the couple’s childlessness, torment him and strain the marriage. I can't say enough about this book. Certainly a contender for the Great Canadian Novel. This is a book that is so moving that it haunts your thoughts; stirs up feelings and thoughts that are best reserved for a personal journal. It is a shame that the average rating for this book is so low. ...more
