Margaret Laurence is one of my favourite Canadian authors and The Stone Angel is her most famous novel, but when I read it years ago, I didn’t like it nearly as much as A Jest of God. I’m so happy that I decided to re-read it! This is a book that I think you can only fully appreciate when you’ve had more life experience. Wonderful book- the reader finds empathy, if not sympathy, with the main character- A proud, crotchety old woman. Anyone who has ever had to deal with the last years/days of an aged parent, should read this.

A classic Canadian tale of a pioneering woman's spirit. This is living proof the survival theme as part of the Canadian identity. People who will particularly enjoy this book are: someone who knows the Canadian Prairies, mothers, and single women. I'm not sure why it's sometimes suggested reading for high school students other than it is part of the Canadian literary canon. I thoroughly enjoyed it .... but it would have to be a very special student that I would recommend it to ...more

I didn't love this when I was in HS, but I learned to appreciate it. Hagar is a real piece of work, and it worth spending time in her head. ...more
