This is the last novel written by Thomas Hardy. In this book, the author describes the life of Jude Fawley, a working-class men who dreams of becoming a scholar.

The central themes of the plot are the unhappy marriages, the Christianity values and the social unrest.

Since I have read the main novels written by Thomas Hardy, it is hard to tell each one is my favorite. But I certainly will add Jude the Obscure in my main list of favorite books.

I was really upset over this book for two days after I finished it, especially upset because of the ending of Sue's storyline (who cares about Jude's, honestly??). I got even more upset when I found out that the book upset Hardy's first wife, Emma Lavinia Hardy, because she thought the relationship between Jude and Sue was too similar to theirs. Emma Hardy is still often presented in a very negative light in biographies of Thomas Hardy who make her out to be little more than a jealous petty wife ...more

Sometimes, if we're lucky, we read a book at the perfect time and something about it speaks to what we're feeling in that exact moment of our lives. Jude did that for me. At the heart of the story is a romantic relationship, but much more than this, Hardy's novel is about profound disappointment and loss -- not just the loss of a relationship but a much bigger and more difficult loss.
