Some writers try hard to write comedy and it shows. Cotterill has it natural. He has the insight and ability not only to create funny circumstances (easy) but to discover the humor in otherwise blunt everyday situations (hard). Now to jump from that and write a good crime/mystery is a plus. To place it in communist Laos of the 70s is brilliant. And to top it off with a character such as Dr. Siri is reader's bliss.

Dr. Siri is certainly one of the most memorable characters I've read in a while. I usually don't like deus-ex-machina moments (and this book certainly has some), but Cotterill has managed to actually work them into the very interesting plot, while his writing feels so smart, effortless and entertaining that I couldn't make myself put the book down before I was finished. ...more
