I read this book a couple of years ago and never completed a review of it until now (I know, what was I thinking?).

Let me start off by saying that this was the first book by Zafon that I had read. But something about the first few pages I read set the tone...I was absolutely enamored. How can you not be with things like this written.....

I picked this up on impulse in B&N a few weeks back. The blurb interested me - I mean a combination of Borges, Umberto Eco, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez AND reminiscent of "The Club Dumas".....Got to get it! I'm glad I did. Ich dachte nicht, dass ich Der Schatten des Windes so sehr mögen würde. Ich hatte es vor einigen Jahren zum Geburtstag bekommen; meine Mutter hatte es in der Zeit, die das Buch bei mir rumlag, gelesen und, obwohl sie sehr schnell damit fertig war, es für nicht allzu überragend befunden.

Es ist wahr, der Roman hat seine kleinen Fehlerchen - wie zB, dass ich nicht wirklich finde, dass der Protagonist Daniel Sempere sehr deutlich herausgearbeitet ist - aber er hat einen unglaublichen pull. 4.5 stars.

Die Spannung ist phänomenal und lässt nicht nach; die Erzählweise ist locker-leicht, ohne dass dadurch der Atmosphäre etwas verloren geht. Der Anfang mag etwas holprig sein, aber je weiter man der Handlung folgt, desto mehr verliert sich diese Anfangsschwierigkeit. Dass der Roman noch dazu überaus bibliophil ist, ist natürlich ebenfalls kein Nachteil. Ich fand die Verweise auf wichtige Schriftsteller und Denker teilweise etwas hochgestochen, aber auf der anderen Seite haben sie mir auch ein Lächeln entlockt, weil ich doch schon relativ oft damit etwas anfangen konnte. (Ich weiß natürlich nicht, was nur implizit war und mir demnach durch die Lappen gegangen ist...)

Daniel Sempere ist für mich definitiv nicht das Highlight der Story: Das ist Fermín. Fermín ist witzig, vielseitig, macht überaus interessante Vergleiche - auch diese teilweise etwas hoch gestochen; jaja, klar, Fermín, Frauen sind nur wie Fleisch - aber dafür umso mitreißender. In seiner Mentorrolle kommt sein Charakter voll zur Geltung.

Ich hatte mehr Probleme mit Daniel, der wenig seinem Alter entsprechend erscheint. Es tut mir leid, die Charaktere empfinde ich als äußerst wichtig, vor allem hier, wo der Ich-Erzähler doch die Handlung vermittelt. Die Handlung an sich ist mitreißend bis zum Schluss - oder doch besonders am Schluss; Nuria Monforts Brief ist unglaublich ergreifend. Meiner Meinung nach händelt Ruiz Zafón das Rätsel um das fiktive Buch Der Schatten des Windes mit viel Gefühl dafür, was die Handlung wann braucht. Das ist ein Künststück - das Mysteriöse war nicht zu viel und nicht zu wenig. Aus meinem Munde, als jemand, der nicht viel Mystery/Suspense liest, sollte das als großes Kompliment gelesen werden.

In short: I loved it much much more than I expected. There are a few things to this book that I need to criticise, like the fact that the continuous references to great authors and thinkers seem a bit pretentious and that I couldn't get a great grasp of the protagonist's character, but this is counterbalanced by many great engaging moments, for instance Nuria Monfort's narrative when she presents the solution to the mystery. I really likes this book. It is a bit atypical of my usual book selections, but a very good piece of literature. I would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries, although this is not your typical who-donne-it book.
