I'll probably add more to this review later. This book is still making me lose sleep days after finishing it, and I need a bit more time to process.
For now: five stars, no question. I love books about books, and this one makes me want to hop on the next flight to Barcelona. ...more

I read this book a couple of years ago and never completed a review of it until now (I know, what was I thinking?).
Let me start off by saying that this was the first book by Zafon that I had read. But something about the first few pages I read set the tone...I was absolutely enamored. How can you not be with things like this written.....

I picked this up on impulse in B&N a few weeks back. The blurb interested me - I mean a combination of Borges, Umberto Eco, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez AND reminiscent of "The Club Dumas".....Got to get it! I'm glad I did. It's simply a good atmospheric mystery and romance that held my interest all the way through although I correctly suspected one aspect of the mystery right from the beginning.

10 year old Daniel Sempere found a treasure. A book titled ‘The Shadow of the Wind’ by Julian Carax which took him to the wonderful world of words. In seeking to know the author and other books by him, Daniel stumbled onto a sinister world where a man with no face was burning all Julian Carax’s books, a homeless man who is not who he seems to be, a beautiful but blind lady, and a policy inspector eaten by jealousy and power.
At first unknowingly and then unable to resist, Daniel was drawn into t ...more

4.5 stars.
...more

I really likes this book. It is a bit atypical of my usual book selections, but a very good piece of literature. I would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries, although this is not your typical who-donne-it book.

This was a fun read. Was is Daniel's story, or Julian's? Burning love, dangerous people, secrets to be kept.
