What Members Thought

First read Feb14/12 to Feb18/12. Library edition.

I had really been looking forward to reading this book. I have read nothing but good reviews and the premise of the book sounded compelling. Plus I heard the book compared to The Hunger Games, which should have made me wary, but actually made me want to read it more. I need to learn to ignore the hype. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in the book.
Beatrice lives in a "dystopian" Chicago and is a member of one of five factions, Abnegation (selflessness). There was a great war and after the w ...more

Beatrice is nervous. She has a test coming up soon. The test. The test that will determine her future. On a particular day each year, all sixteen-year olds have to take a test that will find the dominant quality they possess and thus find the faction that best suits them. A day after the test, they have to make their choice. If they choose a different faction from the one they were born in, they cannot return back or meet their parents. Beatrice's test doesn't go as expected, forcing her to keep

This book was a cliche of YA distopian books. It kept my interest and I didn't go in thinking it was a work of classic litarature so I was not disappointed. It was fun, emotional, and typical, but it has good characters and it keeps me wanting to finish the series, so now I have to wait until the other 2 (or however many) are published.

Aw, this is really hard for me to review...
I find that when most reviews rant and rave about the book, the less excited I get about reading it. With the upcoming Hunger Games movie though, I wanted to read something in similar line (ie. dystopia). I liked it but I don't love it - that makes me sad :(
I liked Roth's descriptive ways (I don't have the book in front of me now but when I do, I'll update this review with a quote). And I really liked the suspense involved for the Aptitude test, in find ...more

I really enjoyed this book. First of all, I like books that are set in the same place I live in. This book was set in Chicago, Illinois. It is kinda weird reading about places you know.
Now about the book, the Divergent world is broken down into five factions: Dauntless, Amity, Abegentation (sp?), Candor and Eudite. You are supposed to fit into one of these places or choose to live in one of these places but the world doesn't work like that. If you don't fit, you are Divergent and as good as dea ...more
