Jesmyn Ward's haunting novel brings us to a place of racial tensions, drug addiction, poor parenting, poverty, and a brutal prison. If that sounds grim, the book is also about the love that their black grandparents have for their two mixed race grandchildren, and the devotion that thirteen-year-old Jojo shows his young sister, Kayla. Their grandfather, a role model for Jojo as he learns to be a man, provides stability and love for his neglected grandchildren.

This was a decent book that was not particularly challenging. I found that some parts were overly descriptive, and I didn’t really like the role that the spirits played in the book.
