[June 2024 Re-read] Still great as a re-read. I'd forgotten how dryly funny this could be, amid all the anger and the grief.

Hard-core science fiction and I are not the best of friends, and I don't read many space operas, as Ancillary Justice is supposed to be. Because so much of the World made is new, along with the unique names for people and places - I'm left lost and confused. So, I don't tend to read a lot of this type of book. That might account for why I found the first half of this book boring, and frankly, I only kept plodding through because this book has been nominated for so many book awards.

If you are looking for something creative and set in the far future this is the book for you. It's scope is big while focusing on the small personal connections. The imagery used to illustrated the authors message was perfect for this kind of book. The switching of view points to get a feeling of the different roles and parts of being a ship with ancillaries was brilliant. The way the main character acted almost human but was different enough because of being and ancillary was done brilliantly. ...more
