What Members Thought

This was such a well-told story! It's historical fiction inspired by a real-life person, Martha Ballard. She left a very complete diary. The author did point out that this was her first book 'inspired' by a real person, not 'based on a person'.
It had mystery, legal courtroom scenes, lots of baby birthing midwifery, the ins and outs of a healthy marriage, and so much more. It's set in late 1700's in Maine. With some flashbacks to earlier events in Massachusetts.
This was a 5 star read for me! ...more

I have read other stories about Martha Ballard, this is one of the most interesting to read. I have long been fascinated with midwives, having given birth at home with my last child. It can be a very triggering book to read so be forewarned.
