I'm glad I buddy read this because I may have put it down after one chapter otherwise. The language takes some getting used to, and I never got completely on board with the narrator's flights of fancy, but the dread, creepiness, and gothic feel I was expecting are all here in spades.
The best thing about Rebecca, by far, is the ending. The twists left me reeling and the afterward, written by Sally Beauman in my edition, cast the entire novel in a new light for me. In my heart it's a thre ...more

Well this was just as good as everyone says. I haven't enjoyed many classics lately, but this one was so engaging, suspenseful, and easy to read. The characters were very well drawn and she really made you feel their feelings; the quiet awkwardness of not quite fitting in, the uncertainty of not quite knowing the rules.
