Beautiful, but what a goddamn angst! Juniper is really a beautiful character who slowly slips into a situation that, until the last chapter, at least I couldn't even consider true and we're talking about a novel, so just to say how much I empathized. Unfortunately, however, I have to admit that this time as well and as in Babel's ending, the author built a spectacular crescendo that, however, collapsed a bit miserably. Absolute huge hype for this book and for me, it just did not live up to it. While I didn't hate it, I didn't love it either. I found the main character terribly annoying even though the plot was interesting and ultimately, I think that was my biggest problem, lowering my enjoyment of it. I read this for the 52 book challenge and had to read 2 similar books - this was one of them and I think I preferred the other one.

This book completely lived up to the hype and good press. It's about internet trolling, racism and cancel culture in the literary community, and it's done in such a smart way. June steals her friend Athena's manuscript on her death, refines it and passes it off as her own. Athena is Chinese-American and her book is about a part of Chinese-American history. June justifies the book as her own to herself (and others) in a number of ways. I won't say much more, but the story unfolds in such a train

I had to put this book down a few times and take breaks from it. There were so many dislikable people and super poor, morally awful choices made in this story.
So much of the propulsion of the action revolves around being too much online. Don't get me wrong, it is a book that is a satirical indictment of many things in the publishing/ writers realm. But I just feel like if the narrator had taken the advice to unplug and not partake in online discourse, how different things would have been.
