The first third of this book was tremendous. Being inside the head of this narrator as she steals her friend's manuscript and justifies it to herself was one of the most uncomfortable reading experiences, but so well executed that I couldn't pull away. The description of the pressures of publishing, her intense and intensely jealous friendship, and her self-justification was perfectly described. Really, the book is worth it just for that experience.

4.5 stars. So sharp, you almost don’t even feel it slice. Novelize white fragility, add some self-delusion, and boom — you have this brilliant social commentary. Our protagonist is about as reliable as Holden… only, with even less self-awareness. Really enjoyed it.
