This book is just so weird. I don't know if I got it ... but I didn't hate it ... did I like it? I'm still not sure, so I'm going to continue with the series and read book 2.

I don't even know what to say about this book. I have a lot of conflicting feelings. On the one hand, I'm ridiculously intrigued and want to finish the series to know what happens next. On the other hand, this was boring as all hell.

This was a gripping and pretty fast read, with good writing and plenty of creepy encroaching-wilderness atmosphere to keep me hooked. Unfortunately, I wanted way more out of the characters. The narration felt very distant. This was an expedition of women, but they read like guys to me. There was zero camaraderie or complex emotion, apart from dread--though I'm willing to believe the narrator may have purposely withheld more than was given.
