This book was selected by my library as a community read, and I can see why. This is a heartbreaking book telling the story of a potential future dystopia where nearly all animals are extinct because of climate change and habitat destruction. The protagonist here wants to follow some of the last arctic terns on what might be their final migration.

The book reveals the story slowly through flashbacks and memories. It's quite well constructed and kept me engaged throughout.

I'm surprised by my rating, definitely not what I was thinking I would rate it following so many glowing and wonderful reviews. Indeed, I am very much in the minority with my overall opinion of this book. Even though there were many, plentiful beautifully written moments inside, there was just something else I felt was lacking overall. I would give this ten stars if able. Migrations tells a story of Franny Stone. One of the most haunted characters who is constantly on the run from life. She has a passion for nature and, in particular, birds. Through reading this stunning book, I walked away feeling more in tune with nature, more conscientious of my role in its demise, and kinship with a woman who is only alive on my head.

This was a pretty haunting reading experience. Much is withheld and slowly revealed throughout the book through flashbacks. Not my favorite structure, but there are good character-driven reasons for the hidden information so it didn't bother me too much. Plus the reveals are fairly predictable and the plot clips along. There's some disbelief to suspend - but the decision to place the novel in a very near possible future where climate change is running its course helps.

I'm going to chalk this up as an "it's not you, it's me" book where I struggled to connect emotionally and had to push myself through to the end with 6 hours left on my library loan. The concept was intriguing though, and the audio narrator did a great job juggling half a dozen accents. It's possible this one was too literary and the timeline too convoluted to work well for me as an audiobook. ...more
