this review is for the audiobook edition, narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.
this is going to be a weird review. sorry! it's landed in the dreaded 3-star bucket, and this is always tricky terrain for me.
overall, the story is fun, silly, and entertaining, with a side of grittiness. it is a great 'distraction' book, or palate cleanser between heavier reads.

This is very much a first in series: lots of world building, snippets of character backgrounds, lots of seemingly insignificant characters being introduced that you know will play a bigger role in the later books. There is some substance to it, and the plot was really original, but a little hard to follow with all of the background stuff going on.
