Ibrahim did a great job captivating the Chinese-American immigration history process to San Francisco during the 1920s in this novel. The main character Mei Ling has to marry a Chinese-American man in her sister's place since her sister became sick before the ceremony. She has to rely on trusting her new (and unknown) husband, trusting in Quan Yin, and most importantly, trusting in herself to preserve her new family and new life.

Beautiful Writing Highlighting Little-Known History for Those on the East Coast
This book gave a sorrowful and elegant finish to a history I had no knowledge of. It’s an important story and one that helped me learn of a strength, grace, and determination of a community across the country from me. Highly recommended.
