With many other mystery series, I have endeavored to read the first in the series to gain insight. At such time, an author may give us background for a character's raison d'etre. I freely admit that I came to know Poirot on TV, not through print, so I felt perfectly free to read in whatever order an installment came into my hands and not worry about the first in the series. I wasn't wrong in that thinking, but I'm very glad to have read this.
