I have read this classic at least 5 times, and am very happy that I own this limited edition, illustrated copy from the 1980's. This is NOT the 'usual Stephen King' fare- even the writing style is quite different from his earlier horror stuff. While this book is a complete stand-alone story on its own, I always look at it as merely a prologue/intro to the magnificent 'Dark Tower' opus = King's master work comprising of 8 novels, and encompassing themes + characters from the entire Stephen King U

Read this in one sitting as I was awake all night due to insomnia and had it on hand. This is my 1st re-read of this one in about 15 years. It ages very, VERY well. Now I must resist falling down into the 'Dark Tower' universe as it will suck all my reading prowess/feelings and leave me unable to read any other thing until the very end of it all! Loaned this series by a buddy at work and just tore through the first book. It's fantastic and I am really enjoying the series. Can't believe I haven't read it yet.
