A very dark non-fiction account of the lives of different women interviewed in China in the 1990s by journalist Xinran, who was presenting a radio programme about the experience of Chinese women at the time. Later she came to the West and wrote the book.

Painful yet I'm grateful to be living in the time that I'm living and in the places I have lived. And yet... I did not completely escape many of the things these women suffer. I don't mean that I am suffering but that I am affected both directly and indirectly. For example, I'm still awkward at greeting my girlfriends with kisses, I barely hug my mother, and never my parents-in-law... There are just cultural reserve that feel unbreakable.

so beautifully written it can't be read as fact, although it is, your 'sense' insists it's fiction, and tells of such horrifying things, that any horror fan should read it. The author's compassion and endless caring is truly inspiring and incredible, she really cares
