Perhaps if I had read this book at any other time (not the depressing, chaotic year that 2020 has turned out to be), I would have enjoyed this story more. I appreciated the fact that Thomas Hardy presented the beautifully tragic Tess in the light that he did. Tess, with her indomitable spirit and determined self-reliance, was a genuine hero. I listened to this whilst gardening. It has to be one of the best books from LibriVox that I’ve listened to so far. To be honest I don’t know if I would have finished it if I was reading it in book form.
The whole novel is the story of Tess, a beautiful and naïve girl, who grew up poor in rural England. Being outside whilst listening to the book made it really come to life more. This was the first book I read by Thomas Hardy, though I don't think it will be the last. I loved his writing style, and while the book was an emotional roller coaster, I loved it as well. There are some really interesting themes, particularly, I think, about forgiveness or rather the lack of it. I won't give anything away, but it's a very thought-provoking book with some themes that are still relevant over a hundred years later.
