Absorbing, challenging, different. A story of urban Oakland Native Americans with a few non Indians sprinkled in. What they know feel, absorb or don’t know of their identity. The generations, family, absent family.
I wish there had been more about the Alcatraz occupation, although that section is told by an 11 year old child and reflects her understanding or lack thereof. And I just can’t figure why she and her sister were not creeped out sleeping in the prison cells.
Very much worth reading.

There There by Tommy Orange, tells the perplexity of Native Americans who dwell in the cities. The book follows several people as they get ready to meet at the Oakland Powwow. Each has their own story of being a native to a country and at the same time being treated as an illegal alien. It was so refreshing to read an author who knows the plights bought upon his family, friends, and relatives and his willingness to share their struggle and heartbreak with the rest of us.
