Oh. My. Goodness! I started this book several years ago and put it aside. Not my cup of tea.
Now my book club is reading it so I decided to give it another try and I am SO glad I did. My initial reaction to not liking it was that someone as cranky and curmudgeonly as Ove should have been older than 59. Once I got past that I was in for a spectacular ride. There is humor and sadness bound together in this sweet story. It's a story of loss, of kindness, of unusual friendships, of love...

I liked this more than thought I would! Also, despite its main topic, which is brutally sad, the book was hilarious! I found myself shaking my head in laughter many times at poor Ove and his ordeals. I am loving all the Swedish books I have been reading lately. I then lent this book to the 'Ove' in MY life- wonder if he will recognize himself! --Jen from Quebec

Ove is an ageing widower who sticks to the rules and insists on everybody else sticking to them, too--to the extent that he yells at his new neighbours for reversing a trailer into the "no vehicles" area so they can move in, and locks people's bicycles into the bicycle shed for them. Since Swedish people seem to live with more community-run things than we do in the UK--like a communal heating system for a row of houses--he has plenty of scope to interfere in everybody's lives, but also to help.
