What Members Thought
Not a comfortable read, as always with Ian McEwan, but I really suffered for these characters. Sometimes with his books I just admire the writing because I couldn't care what happens. Not this time!

This wonderful novel is the second I have read by McEwan. It is a quick but devastating read that places you in the mind of it subjects in a way many authors struggle to do. The novel can be described as a love story that nearly everyone has experienced in their time. Brilliant. It could nearly be read in one sitting and still devastate all the same.
I didn't like this as much as some of McEwan's work that I've read, and it left you with a lot of questions at the end, which was a little frustrating. You feel sympathetic towards both characters, but there is a lot about Florence that you never really discover, made more obvious by the fact that we don't see how the rest of her life pans out, only from a distance.
