Not a comfortable read, as always with Ian McEwan, but I really suffered for these characters. Sometimes with his books I just admire the writing because I couldn't care what happens. Not this time!

I flipped through this book in an evening. I REALLY need to stop assuming that literary fiction is supposed to have happy and/or satisfactory endings. Heck, I would take even a lukewarm ending. Also, the book's theme made me wrongly complacent—oh, a wedding night, how nice. And once AGAIN, I find myself reading a book that perpetuates the stereotype that Brits don't know how to screw. (Or, for the ones that do know how to screw: if they do it, their whole lives become ruined as a result of it.)

This wonderful novel is the second I have read by McEwan. It is a quick but devastating read that places you in the mind of it subjects in a way many authors struggle to do. The novel can be described as a love story that nearly everyone has experienced in their time. Brilliant. It could nearly be read in one sitting and still devastate all the same.
