Ugh I KNOW! I was supposed to like this book! I am so mad right now! Allow me to explain myself.
I got about halfway through and realized I was forcing myself to finish. Did I actually care if I finished this book? No, not really. Was I invested in the characters? No, there wasn't a whole lot of character development. Was I invested in the story? Was there a story?

I loved the characters in this book, and the language and metaphors are beautiful. I only gave it 4 stars because I wasn't a fan of the way it ended. I also truly felt like the book is heavier on the fiction than the "historical". Yes, it's a war story, but was Paris ever bombed in WWII? I'm thinking not...but that's just me. Could be wrong. Not going to say anything else because I don't want to spoil. Recommend.

I am not sure what else I could add the the universal praise heaped on this novel except to say this. It is an amazing work that seems to bring fiction alive. It is so sad and heartbreaking and yet the temptation is to start the book over again upon finishing just to feel the depths of the writing and the power of its prose.
