Beautiful and deep book,written in a relatively smooth way and impressive considering that the author was very young when she wrote it. Life in America's deep south just before the Second World War through the eyes of some unforgettable characters such as Singer, the deaf-mute, and Mike the girls who loved music and growing up.

I was slow to warm to this book because for some reason I felt I had an idea about what it was going to be like and then it was nothing like that. By the end, I found the story of isolation and frustrated dreams incredibly moving.
