While the writing's obviously really good, I can't say I enjoyed this - except maybe the first chapter, Franny. I wondered where that was going but was disappointed when it only went to flop on the couch. I found Zooey pretentious, and if I'd been their mother I'd have abandoned those technically adult but still infantile children and that awful apartment - or better, kicked them out and sold the apartment.

A few years ago I taught Catcher in the Rye and I hated it. Holden annoyed me from beginning to end, which I don't recall being the case when I read the book as a teen. I didn't go into this expecting to like it much, and I didn't. But I disliked it so much less than I expected.

1) I personally do not care to read "god damn" this and that. It was necessary to the work in this instance.
2) These people not only smoke incessantly; they have appalling smoking etiquette.
These things being said, I found the book to be interesting. It is a quick, yet absorbing, read.
