In comparison to the movie... It felt simpler, the characters and events were less well developed. Its hard when the movie is so ubiquitous to then experience the book which is very different.
As " the first American fairy tale"... it definitely feels new. Aspects of darker themes from Classical fairy tales are present but it doesn't really feel like a fairy tale.

Wow. This was so different from the movie and honestly so much more enjoyable. I don't know if I would have enjoyed this as much as I did if I'd not grown up with the Hollywood version of the story.
